The Year in Review
Writing seems to be part of a newfound hobby and I thought it would be cool to pen some thoughts and reflect how the year went. 2018 passed like a breeze and before you know it 2019 just took flight and I feel this process gets accelerated when you enter the corporate world, especially when chasing deadlines. I’m glad that I’ve learned new things, met new people and explored new places.
Where have I been this year?
The first trip of the year was a getaway to Batam, Indonesia with my college mates and we spent a good 4 nights. There were some hiccups in arranging this gathering as some of us were unable to secure PTOs in advance and while some did work emergency took over at the very last minute so it can’t be helped. Batam is actually a great place to unwind and things in general are affordable due to our strong currency. Later this year, I had also visited Yogyakarta as the trip to Vietnam got cancelled. I can see why Yogya is also popular with tourist with the likes of Jomblang cave and Borobudur Temple.
I went to Korea for the first time in June to experience korean cuisine and fashion streets and managed catch up with an old friend of mine who’s pursuing education there. Fashion’s great – you get trendy apparels and accessories at affordable prices and you can get face mask almost at every corner of the street. Food is good too, soju pairing with korean bbq, army stew and cold noodles, you will probably run out of money before you run out of choices to eat!
I also visited India for a work trip and got to meet the new batch of management trainees that will be joining our team. It was warming to get to meet old colleagues again after a year. Last but not the least, if you’re a super fan of spicy and flavourful cuisine like me, you will love it here. Just remember to try Dum Biryani, Pani Puri, Gulab Jamun and if you like BBQ and free flow stuff, I’ld say go for barbecue nation!
The trip to Bangkok was an impromptu one to celebrate my partner’s birthday. Bangkok is easily one of the top destinations in Southeast Asia due to its night and weekend markets (chatuchak) Moreover, travelling around is easy with their metro (the air-conditioning is super) and tuktuk. You can go for cab but the roads can get quite congested during peak hours.
Some Tinkering
Sometimes I get inspiration to work on a projections mostly DIY. Last year, I started 3 projects namely:
- DIY Arcade Joystick powered by RetroPie
The motivation of starting this was to relive childhood moments when SEGA and nintendo were favourites. Especially with games like Contra, Sonic, Mortal Kombat and others. I never had the budget for joystick controllers for PS1 so having this DIY joystick from Amazon made me felt like king. (i’ll probably add some stickers/skins to enhance the aesthetics - SSD enhancement w/ DVD caddy
My well-used ASUS laptop is degrading and the boot duration is taking longer and longer to the extent that I can actually make coffee. I looked online and discover that it is possible to fit a SSD harddrive in DVD caddy since no one actually uses DVD drive nowadays. Ordered the caddy and SSD from lazada and started taking apart my laptop. The learning experience comes with both satisfaction, frustration and disappointment. My laptop model is not very popular so I couldn’t find any tutorials or references on how to get started. Took me a while to get it. The replacement part was one chore, the software part is another. In order to not lose any information and restore the state of my laptop ASAP, the fastest way was to clone my drive and load the OS. It rebooted, works like a charm for 5 secs before BSOD visited me repeatedly like a plague. Manage to solve the issue with a little search here and there. I realize knowing how to type elegantly in Google search engine to solve a problem actually can be a skill. - AnAnticSapien, personal website
The idea of building this website is to share my travelling experiences, ideas and start the habit of writing and reflecting. I hope the content I share will be useful to readers and myself.
Let’s see what other projects 2019 have in store!
